Biography

Noni joined KWTRP in 2013 and currently heads the Engagement platform at the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP). She has a background in Strategic Behaviour Change Communication, Social Marketing and more recently Community, Public and Policy Engagement. Her primary role at KWTRP involves developing best practice strategies for the engagement and involvement of communities, stakeholders/policy makers, and publics in research work across the different KWTRP sites in Kenya and Uganda. She is also responsible for mentoring and building capacity of community liaison and research staff in engagement. Additionally, she plays a role in the monitoring and evaluation of KWTRP engagement activities, including sharing lessons learnt with other researchers and engagement practitioners in Africa, Europe and Asia. Noni is driven by an interest in how to develop meaningful interactions between Researchers and Communities/stakeholders/public in LMICs; not only ensuring that community and stakeholder views and perspectives influence the conduct of research, but also that communities can be inspired by researchers from the region, and scientists by the lessons of quality science communication. She is a member of the Global Health Bioethics Network (GHBN) and the NIHR Community Engagement and Involvement Advisory Network. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Communication, with a focus on Development.

Current Work

In addition to Programme engagement activities, I am coordinating engagement activities as Co-lead of a Dissemination and Sustainability Core work package in a project called UZIMA-DS, which is a partnership between Aga Khan University, Michigan University, and KWTRP. I am also part of 2 NIHR funded projects; one looking at Hypertension management at community level (IHCoR), and another looking at Vaccine uptake barriers and enablers among vulnerable populations in Sub-sahara Africa (Vanguard). In these projects, I co-lead the community engagement and involvement work packages.
