The Virus Genomics for Outbreak Response (ViGOR) project team in Kenya (Workpackage 5), led by Charles Agoti, convened a national stakeholders’ meeting on May 28th, 2026 at the Best Western Hotel, Upper Hill, Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting aimed at exploring strategies for strengthening disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and epidemic preparedness in Central and East Africa. The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, research institutions, public health agencies, county governments, development partners, private health institutions, and community health promoters. The meeting provided a platform to discuss opportunities for strengthening the integration of genomic surveillance and disease modelling within Kenya’s Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system. The discussions generated valuable insights on opportunities, challenges, and practical considerations for incorporating genomic and modelling evidence into public health decision-making. The meeting marked an important step toward fostering collaboration, stakeholder ownership, and the co-development of a framework to support the effective integration of these tools into Kenya’s disease surveillance systems.
