Bio
Peter is a qualified and practicing medical doctor, clinical scientist and Professor. He holds MB.ChB, MPH and PhD. He is a Senior Research Fellow with EDCTP and a Fellow of Uganda National Academy of Sciences (FUNAS). His experience spans 25 years of highly productive clinical and academic career. He is a Professor at Busitema University and a founding Executive Director of a progressive Mbale Clinical Research Institute [MCRI, http://www.mcri.ac.ug] in Eastern Uganda. In addition, he is a Visiting Professor at The Open University in UK, and Clinical Adjunct Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. He is ranked among the top 25 out of 500 researchers in Uganda (https://mulengeranews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/uganda-top-scientists-Edited.pdf).

He has held grants as either PI or co-investigator investigating major public health conditions in Eastern Uganda including the Joint Global Health Trials (UK MRC, DFID, Wellcome) funded pneumonia trial (COAST, ISRCTN15622505), MRC funded PKPD of azithromycin in severe malaria bacterial co-infection in African children (TABS- PKPD, ISRCTN49726849), nutritional study (MIMBLE, ISRCTN 10309022), NIH funded sickle cell trial (REACH, NCT01966731), malaria studies (MEPIE Study, TMA2016SF1514), and Uganda Government funded COVID-19 studies. He has co-authored in over 130 publications of which 89 are indexed in PUBMED including 5 in the New England Journal of Medicine; [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Olupot-Olupot]. His current focus is on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases on which he has furthered work on malaria research including severe malaria spectrum, malaria related acute kidney injury, COVID-19, Ebola virus disease among others. In addition, he does epidemiological research on haematological disorders and their co-morbidities.
