About

Collins is a molecular virologist and a postdoctoral researcher in the Epidemiology and Demography Department (EDD) at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme. He holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology (Virology) from the National University of Singapore and an MSc in Infection Biology, Vaccinology and Drug Discovery from the University of Basel. He joined the programme after completing his postdoctoral training in molecular virology in the Virology Section at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. During his postdoctoral research at Utrecht University, he led the work that identified integrin α2β1 as the cellular receptor for equine rhinitis A virus (ERAV), revealing a hitherto unseen combination of protein-protein and protein-glycan interactions between a picornavirus and its receptor. He currently leads a study evaluating the use of residual clinical specimens for multi-pathogen serosurveillance across Kenya. This work seeks to evaluate the use of convenience sampling as a low-cost and a sustainable approach for monitoring population-level immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and assessing exposure to emerging and endemic pathogens, including arboviruses and malaria.
