Makobu has been with the Programme since September 2016, working with the IAVI team on HIV prevention research, where his work was focused in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in key populations. It is this work that formed the basis of his PhD from the university of Amsterdam.

Currently he is involved in a study that carries out Serosurveillance of COVID-19 in the general population. With a plan to scale up serosurveillance from just COVID-19 to other priority pathogens in Kenya. The scale-up will include vaccine preventable diseases and arboviruses. The team also plans to engage relevant stakeholders to develop a ranked list of pathogens for serosurveillance in Kenya. The aim is for the work to impact the development of a national serosurveillance platform for Kenya and possibly the East African region.
