Clinical Officer

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a state corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, as the national body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya. KEMRl’s vision is “to be a leading centre of excellence in research for human health,” and its mission is “to improve human health and quality of life through research, capacity building, innovation, and service delivery”

The KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme (KWRP) is a partnership between KEMRI, Wellcome, and the University of Oxford. The Programme established in 1989, has evolved from conducting research in the immunology and epidemiology of malaria to a world class research institute conducting multi-disciplinary research that spans molecular biology to health systems and policy research. The KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme (KWRP) seeks to invite applications from experienced person to fill the following positions.

JOB PURPOSE:

To execute daily clinical research activities including providing clinical care to study participants, supervising junior staff and carrying out study related procedures to achieve the study objectives

DESCRIPTION:

Duration: One (1) Year, renewable subject to availability of funds and performance

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 

Reports to: Site Lead                 

Direct and indirect reportees: None

BUDGET AND RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY:

Financial: None

Budgeting and Planning: None

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide quality clinical care to research participants.
  • Maintain study documentation, adhering to Good Documentation Practice.
  • Supervise study staff and conduct study activities according to the protocol and standard operating procedures, including reviewing clinical source documents, completing clinical assessment questionnaires, post-procedure monitoring and documentation and follow-up assessments of participants.
  • Carry out specimen collection procedures in strict adherence to the study protocol and standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in the consenting and recruitment of study participants.
  • Assist in maintaining study participants’ documentation and performing clinical procedures under the guidance of the site lead and/or the PI when required to do so.
  • Attend and participate in study related trainings and taking up the responsibility of ensuring that your training is up to date as per the training logs.
  • Attend clinical skills training and updates when required to.
  • Attend and participate in study related meetings and other meetings as needed.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by to them by the site lead or Principal Investigator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery
  • Registered with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in inpatient care
  • Use of Windows, Microsoft Office software

DESIRABLE

  • Previous experience in clinical research
  • Recent clinical experience in pediatric care
  • Training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Research Ethics

The position will be based at the KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme in Nairobi and Mombasa(CGTRH)
