Research Description:

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) causes severe sepsis among children and immunocompromised adults in Africa. The pattern of transmission of the African strain of NTS is not yet known, but it is thought to be human to human, and not through the food chain, which is how it is transmitted in high-income countries. Vaccines against the African strain are currently in development. We are studying the transmission of NTS in Kenya through studies on faecal carriage of NTS and Seroprevalence of anti-Salmonella antibodies using data and samples from multiple sites in Kenya. We are working to develop mathematical models that will predict the impact and cost-effectiveness of anti-NTS vaccines according to different vaccination strategies
