The Programme was host to Eliza Manningham-Buller who is the Chair of the Wellcome Board, Simon Kay who is the Head International Operations and Partnership, Mary De Silva the Head of population Health and Professor Richard Cornall a Professor of Immunology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford on a 2 day visit in Kilifi.
The team had the opportunity to visit the community where they were able to sit in a local discussion meeting by the KEMRI community representatives. They also had an opportunity to experience surveillance activities in the HDSS with a visit to a homestead in the Junju area. The team then had an extensive tour of the facilities starting with the Hospital where they visited the HDU facility and ward 1 and thereafter had a session with the Laboratory team. The students in their various phases of research career development had an opportunity to give presentations with the various senior researcher’s giving insights to the overall Programme objectives.
The Governor also provided a session where she addressed issues ranging from emerging focus areas to funding structures in Wellcome among others.
