In sub-Saharan African children presenting to hospitals with fever due to infection often get severely ill with significant mortality and residual sequelae. The overlap between severe malaria and other serious diseases makes it difficult to ascribe disease episodes to malaria parasites even when they are present. We are working to better understand the aetiology and mechanisms of disease due to pathogens and their interplay with severe malnutrition using molecular approaches such as proteomics and next generation sequencing. The main aim is to develop better diagnostic and early prognostic tools that will aid in clinical management.
