School Engagement Programme: Majaoni Secondary School Wins National Science Competition

Majaoni School Science Club

Students from the Majaoni Secondary School Science Club beat schools from eight different provinces to win a National Science Club Competition. Majaoni’s winning poster was a collaboration between the Majaoni School Science Club and the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Schools Engagement Programme. Majaoni’s winning project investigated the influence of tooth brushing on oral bacteria from which they developed a poster with the help of their science teacher and Dr Martin Rono from the Programme. See poster here.

The project, jointly sponsored by AFRAKEN (Association of French Alumni in Kenya), Campus France, Institute Francais, KWTRP and The French Embassy, gave the students an opportunity to work closely with a researcher over two school terms, visit the KEMRI labs, and receive a computer and LCD projector for their school. The organizers of the competition will also provide further donations to the school and give the students an opportunity to write an article in the French Embassy’s monthly periodical.
