Brett has been with the Programme since 1992. He holds an MPhil in Malaria Immunology from the Dept. of Medicine, University of Liverpool and an HND in Clinical Chemistry from the University of Manchester. Previous appointments include work in the UK NHS Diagnostic Laboratory Services in the North of England, WHO Technical Adviser to the National Public Health Laboratories, Kathmandu - Nepal, and tutoring in the Department of Medical Parasitology, Liverpool School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He led the design and construction oversight of the Centre's laboratories and office facilities completed in 2005, and has established international recognition of the laboratories' quality management systems, with GCLP Accreditation awarded, and maintained, since 2007. From 2008, Brett was seconded to the Muhimbili Wellcome Programme in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania for a period of 2 years where he helped to upgrade the laboratory infrastructure and management systems to underpin the research agenda on Sick Cell Disease there. He continues to manage the laboratory operations in Dar and is also involved in the planning and development of high quality laboratories in other Centers within the East African region.
