Using a participatory action research approach Alun Davies has established the Schools Engagement Programme at the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya. This work draws heavily from his work as a science teacher in both UK and Kenya, and his experience in managing a IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) funded research project based in Kilifi. Funding from three Wellcome Trust International Engagement Awards and a strong working relationship with the Kilifi County Education Office, has enabled the Schools Engagement Programme to conduct engagement activities with students and teachers from over 25 local schools. These activities are aimed at promoting mutual-understanding between researchers and the community; positive attitudes towards school science and science in general; and positive educational aspirations among school students. The Kilifi Schools Engagement Programme combines traditional face-to-face interactive activities between researchers and schools, with ground-breaking on-line engagement. More recently Alun has led several initiatives using Participatory Video as a research tool and as a medium of communication between researchers and broader audiences. He has an MA (distinction) in Education, International Development and Health promotion from the Institute of Education at London University and is currently studying for his Ph.D.
